Since 2011, the SPD-SX has been a fixture on professional stages around the world, its distinctive silhouette always standing side by side with digital and hybrid drums. Roland's flagship instrument sparked the sample pad revolution with its wide range of tracks, clicks, loops, and unique sounds. Drummers and live musicians can record, store, and trigger any type of sound on demand, making it much easier to make gigs sound like the original recordings. In addition to its sampling and import capabilities, the SPD-SX comes with versatile preset kits and a large library of preloaded samples, including loops, unique sounds, and melodic phrases for brainstorming and creating music on the fly.

sample, import, and trigger audio
The SPD-SX puts a universe of sounds under your drumsticks. Trigger an entire track, part of a song, an effect, a click track, or a single sound with just a tap of a pad. Then, control how the audio plays back. From playing covers in clubs and live shows to playing original tracks of songs live, you can easily bring studio-quality sounds to your gigs.

velocity-sensitive pads
The SPD-SX has nine velocity-sensitive rubber pads, and any sound can be assigned to any pad. When you tap the pads lightly, the sound plays that way. And if you want to really thunder, hit it hard for extra volume. If you prefer, set a pad to fixed velocity so it always sounds the same.

LED indicators
Each SPD-SX pad includes a red LED indicator that displays its status and makes it easy to see on stage. You can also configure the LEDs to work the way you want. Assign them to fixed on/off states or have them only light up when the pad's audio is playing. You can also set them to dynamically light up based on audio activity, similar to the level meters on a mixing console.

The more sounds, the merrier, right? With 16GB of storage, the SPD-SX supports up to 25 hours of stereo audio (50 hours of mono) in 44.1kHz, 16-bit WAV/AIFF format. The pad comes preloaded with 210 samples to get you started, including loops, single samples, and melodic phrases. And there are 100 kits (16 presets) for storing your custom arrangements. POWERFUL SAMPLING FUNCTIONS
The SPD-SX's advanced sampling features let you easily capture your own sounds. Connect a mic or mono/stereo line device to the analog inputs, or connect a computer via USB. Then, use Basic Sampling to capture a sound on any pad, or Multi-Pad Sampling to record audio on multiple pads. You can even resample a performance on the SPD-SX, using the included effects.

types of reproduction
Once you've loaded your sounds, control how they play back with three customizable modes: Single, Phrase, and Loop. Choose Single for basic percussion, like drum hits and handclaps, and select Phrase for longer files that need to play once and stop at the end. You also have the Loop option, which plays a file nonstop.

trigger types
Want even more audio control? No problem. You can select the trigger type corresponding to each pad. Choose Shot to play audio every time a pad is hit. And with Alt, playback starts or stops with each hit. When you need maximum flexibility, combine trigger and playback types. And thanks to ultra-fast triggering, you'll always get the timing right.

INTEGRATED AUDIO EDITING
Life on the road is hectic, and sometimes you have to edit sounds on the fly. The SPD-SX's built-in editing tools let you tweak samples without using a DAW. Trim samples, set start and stop points, adjust volume and pitch, and more. You can also splice multiple samples together or split a file into different samples to assign to different pads.

Enjoy the power of the SPD-SX's three effects processors. You can use two processors simultaneously: master effects and kit effects. The master processor applies to all kits and has 11 different types to enhance your performance. Three common front-panel master effects presets apply filters, delays, and short loops to all audio currently outputting from the pad. The two assignable kit effects will sound when you hit a pad in a given kit patch, and you can turn them on and off for complete control.

Inside and outside
Playing live requires a lot of connections, and the SPD-SX lets you manage pad inputs and outputs with ease. You have a variety of outputs for effortless mixing and monitoring. Load, organize, and record sounds with a USB connection and the SPD-SX Wave Manager software. And expand your rig with up to four external pads, two footswitches, and accessories.

audio outputs
With a range of flexible output and routing options, you can seamlessly send pad sounds to different locations for mixing and monitoring. Use the master left/right outputs to send stereo audio or two mono signals to your mixer. Send sound to your monitor engineer or band members with the secondary left/right outputs. And use headphones to clearly hear your system or monitor a click track.

AUDIO/MIDI USB
Connect the SPD-SX to your computer via a USB cable for effortless recording in any DAW. You can also connect to MIDI via USB. And use the legacy MIDI in/out jack to control software instruments, other stage equipment, and automation software like Ableton.

easy sound import
There are two ways to quickly transfer audio files to the SPD-SX. Load the files onto a USB flash drive and copy them. Or use the free SPD-SX Wave Manager software to drag and drop audio from a computer onto individual pads. The software also includes intuitive tools for backing up your work and organizing kits for different gigs.
